The New York Yankees lost their fourth straight game on Saturday, and their third in a row to the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park.
Chance Adams made his major league debut, starting in place of JA Happ, and did a very fine job for the struggling Bombers.
Adams pitched 5.0 strong innings, allowing just three hits. Unfortunately, two of those hits escaped the confines of Fenway, amassing three runs.
The home runs included Mitch Moreland’s 13th of the season, and JD Martinez’s MLB-leading 33rd of the 2018 campaign. No real shame there.
Manager Aaron Boone turned to Chad Green after Chance the Pitcher, and Green spun a scoreless sixth inning with two punchouts.
AJ Cole pitched the final two frames for the Yanks, who gave up a run on a controversial ground-rule double by Sandy Leon in the seventh but bounced back with a strong eighth inning in which he struck out the side.
The offense finally woke up a little bit in the ninth inning off of Craig Kimbrel, getting his first taste of action since July 29 after starter Nathan Eovaldi tossed eight shutout innings and allowed just three hits.
Kimbrel struck out Neil Walker on a very controversial strike three call, and then Brett Gardner on a marginally less controversial call, but the Yankees still put a rally together with two outs.
Giancarlo Stanton roped his second double of the afternoon to center field and Didi Gregorius knocked him in with another double to avoid the shutout, narrowing the gap to 4-1.
Aaron Hicks and Gleyber Torres each worked a walk to bring up Greg Bird, who hit a flyout to center that ended the contest.
The Yankees will try to avoid the sweep with Masahiro Tanaka on the hill Sunday night going up against David Price.
