Robert MacIntyre made a bold statement at the Valspar Championship in Florida by customizing his caddie’s bib with a nod to Europe’s Ryder Cup victory over the USA.
Taking advantage of a unique feature of the tournament that allows players to personalize their caddie’s bib, the Scottish golfer opted for the inscription ‘EUR 16.5-11.5 USA.’ This inscription referenced Europe’s resounding triumph over the USA in Rome in September, with the score reflecting the dominant performance by Europe’s team.
MacIntyre’s choice of wording sparked mixed reactions on social media. Ryder Cup Europe expressed their approval of his playful gesture, while their USA counterparts responded with good-natured banter, indicating that preparations for the next Ryder Cup in 2025 were already underway. The PGA Tour’s official account questioned whether it was too soon to be reminiscing about the Ryder Cup.
At the Ryder Cup, held at the Marco Simone Country Club, MacIntyre showcased strong form, remaining undefeated with two and a half points. However, he did not team up with his English caddie, Mike Burrows, until a month after the event.
Currently participating in his ninth PGA Tour event of the season, MacIntyre has experienced mixed results, having missed the cut in half of his previous appearances. Despite this, he opened the Valspar Championship with a solid one-under-par round, positioning himself six strokes behind the leader, Kevin Streelman of the United States.
