Pakistan Bowler Mohammad Amir Reverses Retirement Decision

Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir will be absent from the beginning of the upcoming season with Derbyshire as he prepares to make his return to international cricket. Initially slated to participate in the first half of the Championship season and all T20 Blast group matches for Derbyshire, Amir’s availability has been restricted to just six group matches post the T20 World Cup.

The 31-year-old is anticipated to be included in Pakistan’s squad for a five-match T20 series against New Zealand, commencing on April 18. Amir, known for his left-arm pace, last represented his country in 2020, accumulating 146 appearances across various formats before retiring, citing mental strain due to team management.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, previously known as Twitter, Amir expressed his desire to don the Pakistan jersey again, citing positive discussions with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) which persuaded him that his presence was still valued. He acknowledged reconsidering his decision in light of family and advisors’ input, declaring his readiness to be considered for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

Amir’s decision echoes that of all-rounder Imad Wasim, who also reversed his international retirement ahead of the T20 World Cup scheduled in the USA and West Indies starting from June 1. Consequently, Derbyshire faces the task of securing an overseas replacement for Amir as they gear up for the Championship campaign starting on April 5.

Despite the setback of Amir’s absence, Derbyshire’s head of cricket, Mickey Arthur, expressed understanding and respect for the bowler’s decision. He revealed insights from recent discussions with the PCB, indicating Amir’s ambition to resume his international career given the opportunity.

Amir’s declaration to prioritize national duty over personal decisions reaffirms his unwavering commitment to representing Pakistan, a sentiment echoed by his fellow cricketers. As Derbyshire navigates the challenge of finding a replacement, Amir’s focus shifts towards reclaiming his spot in the Pakistan squad, driven by his enduring passion for the game and the pride of wearing the green jersey.
