MLB roundup: Padres' shutout ends Braves' win streak

On Wednesday, Juan Soto’s 431-foot homer and Nick Martinez and three relievers’ four-hit shutout ended Atlanta’s eight-game winning streak.

Soto, who entered the game hitting.175, led off the fourth by driving a 1-1 sinker from Braves starter Charlie Morton (2-2) into right center for the game’s only run.

Martinez (1-1) won with six strikeouts, three hits, and two walks in seven innings. The Padres ended a three-game losing run with Josh Hader’s fifth save of the season.

Morton allowed one run on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts in six innings.

Rays 8–0 Reds

Yandy Diaz’s leadoff home run started a six-run first inning and Drew Rasmussen pitched five scoreless innings to help Tampa Bay beat Cincinnati for the second straight time.

Rasmussen (3-1) held the Reds to three hits and struck out seven to win. Randy Arozarena had three hits. The Reds lost the final two games 18-0 after winning the opener 8-1.

Tampa Bay’s 16 wins include six shutouts. The Rays scored six runs on seven hits in Levi Stoudt’s major league debut.

Yankees 3–2 Angels (10 innings).

New York defeated Los Angeles with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly by Gleyber Torres.

Aaron Judge robbed Shohei Ohtani of a homer in the first and hit a two-run homer in the bottom half, but the Yankees never added on and lost the lead in the eighth before winning in extras against Matt Moore (1-1).

Ian Hamilton (1-1) set up Torres with a 1-2-3 10th. New York rookie starter Jhony Brito allowed one run on three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Angels Griffin Canning allowed two runs on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. Four strikes, three walks.

Cardinals 14–5 Diamondbacks

St. Louis defeated Arizona with Tommy Edman’s career-high five RBIs and Nolan Gorman’s first grand slam.

Edman went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer and two-run double as the Cardinals escaped a three-game sweep. Cardinals starter Jake Woodford (1-2) allowed four runs on seven hits and a walk in five innings.

Madison Bumgarner (0-3) gave up seven runs on seven hits and four walks in four innings. Arizona’s Alek Thomas and Pavin Smith homered.

Brewers 5–3 Mariners

Rookie Brice Turang’s two-run single in the eighth inning helped Milwaukee win the three-game interleague series against Seattle.

Rowdy Tellez’s two-run single off Matt Brash (1-2) capped the Mariners’ five-run seventh. Milwaukee’s Eric Lauer (3-1) won with two runs on four hits in 7 2/3 innings. Lefty struck out four and walked one.

Matt Bush got Tommy La Stella to fly out to shallow right and Jose Caballero to pop out to third in the ninth to win his first save of the season.

Guardians 3–Tigers 2

Cleveland ended Detroit’s five-game winning streak with Jose Ramirez’s three-run homer.

Cal Quantrill (1-1) allowed four hits and four strikeouts in six scoreless innings. Emmanuel Clase saved his sixth game after a ninth-inning jam.

Tigers Spencer Torkelson and Zach McKinstry hit solo homers. Starter Spencer Turnbull (1-3) allowed three runs and three hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Giants 5, Marlins 2 (11).

Michael Conforto’s 11th-inning two-run homer broke San Francisco’s five-game losing streak.

The Giants escaped a three-game sweep after Mike Yastrzemski hit another two-run homer off reliever Devin Smeltzer (0-1).

Miami’s bullpen held the Giants scoreless for 15 innings in this series before Conforto’s homer. The Marlins led the league in bullpen ERA (0.72) since April 11.

Phillies 5–2 White Sox

Philadelphia defeated Chicago in the rubber match of a three-game series thanks to Trea Turner’s 3-for-5 and Taijuan Walker’s 6-plus innings.

Turner had two RBIs, two runs, and missed the cycle for the Phillies, who have won four of their previous six games. Walker (2-1) allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in his second straight strong start.

Chicago lost its sixth game in eight with Andrew Vaughn’s first home run and two singles. Luis Robert Jr.’s first-inning double was the White Sox’s sole extra-base hit.

Mets 5–3 Dodgers

New York trounced Los Angeles despite Max Scherzer’s expulsion thanks to Brandon Nimmo’s 5-for-5 performance and two-run homer.

Crew chief Phil Cuzzi dismissed Scherzer before the fourth inning after a second glove inspection. After an examination before the third inning, the veteran was told to change gloves.

Former Met Noah Syndergaard (0-3) pitched six innings for the Dodgers, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. After six years with the team, he made his Mets debut.

Pirates 14–Rockies 3

In Denver, Andrew McCutchen and Rodolfo Castro homered and had two hits each as Pittsburgh defeated Colorado.

Pittsburgh swept the three-game series with three hits from Jason Delay and Connor Joe, two from Carlos Santana, Ke’Bryan Hayes, and Mark Mathias. Johan Oviedo (2-1) won with six strikeouts and a run on three hits in six innings.

Colorado’s Ryan McMahon had three hits.

Rangers 12–3 Royals

Texas won a road sweep as Marcus Semien went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs and Ezequiel Duran delivered a bases-clearing double in the seventh inning to break the game open.

Semien singled in Leody Taveras in the fourth, giving Rangers left-handed starter Martin Perez the run support he needed to win. Perez (3-1) struck out three in 5 2/3 innings and surrendered one run on a Bobby Witt Jr. home run. Perez allowed three runs and eight hits.

Jonah Heim’s single loaded the bases for Duran’s game-changing double and 9-3 lead. Kansas City’s Brady Singer (1-2) lost.

Cubs 12–2 Athletics

Patrick Wisdom’s two-run triple capped a great West Coast trip, Eric Hosmer blasted his first home run of the season, and Chicago spoiled Oakland pitching prospect Mason Miller’s major league debut with a sweep.

Left-hander Justin Steele (3-0) pitched six good innings to help the Cubs finish a 5-1 California swing with a walk-off loss to the Dodgers on Saturday.

Miller allowed two runs and four hits in 4 1/3 innings against the Cubs, hitting 100 mph 15 times. In the second inning, he struck out Cody Bellinger, Edwin Rios, and Wisdom.

Orioles 4–0 Nationals

Baltimore defeated Washington after Kyle Bradish pitched six shutout innings and Adam Frazier hit a two-run homer as a substitute.

The Orioles, who were restricted to four hits, won both games of the two-game set as the Nationals failed to score on both nights. 1-0 on Tuesday. Bradish (1-0) gave up five hits, one walk, and six strikeouts in his single outing this year, leaving in the second inning April 3 versus Texas with an injury.

Nationals starter MacKenzie Gore (2-1) lost after six innings of three runs on three hits and seven strikeouts. Walked four. Washington’s Keibert Ruiz went 3-for-4.

10–4 Twins

In the second game of a three-game series, visiting Minnesota beat Boston when outfielder/first baseman Joey Gallo hit a three-run home run hours after returning from the disabled list.

Gallo’s team-leading fourth home run gave the Twins a 7-0 lead in the third inning after missing 10 games with a right intercostal strain. Minnesota’s Trevor Larnach hit a three-run home run and Edouard Julien a two-run blast. Julien had three hits and Larnach four RBIs in the win.

Boston’s Enrique Hernandez homered. Hernandez scored on a ninth-inning sacrifice fly and had two hits. Boston starter Corey Kluber (0-4) allowed seven runs in five innings. Six hits, two walks, four strikeouts. Joe Ryan (4-0) won.

Astros 8–1 Jays

Houston defeated Toronto with Luis Garcia’s seven scoreless innings, Jake Meyers’ two-run double, and Bryan Abreu’s relief magic.

Garcia (1-2) allowed 12 earned runs in 14 innings in his first three starts of the season. He struck out his first six Blue Jays batters to help the Astros win the rubber match and their second series.

Jose Berrios (1-3) pitched seven innings and allowed two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
