Liverpool face tough test at boyhood fan Postecoglou’s Spurs

Ange Postecoglou, the manager of Tottenham Hotspur, will be especially eager to snap Liverpool’s winning streak when they come to town in the Premier League on Saturday.

Since he joined Spurs in July, Postecoglou’s offensive approach has gained a lot of fans, and the matchup between two of the league’s four undefeated teams may be exciting.

Fourth-placed Tottenham has had its greatest start to a league campaign in 57 years, and Liverpool, now in second place, are vying for their sixth straight league victory and eighth overall.

The great Liverpool teams of the past inspired Postecoglou’s football career, so the match will be a trip down memory lane and can reveal a lot about his team’s future.

“I was a die-hard Liverpool supporter. I liked Bill Shankly, I loved the boot room, I loved the entire tale,” he said in a recent BBC interview with Gary Lineker, a former England and Spurs striker.

“Hey, mate, I took the posters down. When questioned if he was still a fan, he made a joke.

Tottenham is hopeful that England playmaker James Maddison can play despite jarring his knee in the 2-2 draw at Arsenal last weekend. In their previous 20 league meetings, Tottenham has only won once against Liverpool.

In their last five games, Liverpool had scored three goals, and in their 3-1 League Cup third-round victory against lower-league Leicester City on Tuesday at Anfield, they rested several key players.

EIGHT UP?
On Saturday, Manchester City will go to Wolverhampton Wanderers, who are currently in 16th position, with six victories from six league games.

This week’s League Cup third-round results saw both teams lose, and City boss Pep Guardiola refrained from starting attacker Erling Haaland in Wednesday’s 1-0 loss against Newcastle United.

City will play without center midfielder Rodri, who is serving a three-match suspension, as they attempt to win their first seven games in a top-flight season.

The only non-promoted team in the Premier League without a victory this year, Bournemouth is now in 17th position and has not yet defeated Arsenal, who are currently in fifth place and have gone undefeated in their past seven league games going back to last season.

Bukayo Saka, an English attacker, is questionable for the Gunners after suffering an injury against Tottenham.

With 18 goals, third-placed Brighton & Hove Albion leads the league in scoring. On Saturday at noon, they take on sixth-placed Aston Villa, looking for their tenth straight home league victory.

After defeating the Londoners 3-0 in their League Cup encounter on Tuesday, Manchester United will meet Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday for the second time in five days.

Eddie Howe’s former team, Burnley, visits Newcastle, while West Ham United hosts Sheffield United. Newcastle defeated Sheffield United 8-0 last weekend, with eight different players scoring.

After defeating Brentford 3-1 last weekend and Villa 2-1 in the League Cup, Everton should welcome promoted Luton Town and record their third victory in three games.

With only three goals thus far, Luton, the side with one point, has the lowest goal total in the league.

On Sunday, Nottingham Forest will play home to Brentford, and on Monday, Fulham will play host to Chelsea in a mid-table West London rivalry.
