Liberty star Stewart named WNBA MVP

After a strong season in which she led the Brooklyn club to a franchise-best 32-8 record, New York Liberty forward Breanna Stewart was awarded the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) Most Valuable Player on Tuesday. This is the second time that Stewart has received this honor.

The 29-year-old star, who won the award earlier in 2018 while playing for the Seattle Storm, is only the second player in WNBA history to be awarded MVP with multiple clubs. Additionally, she established a single-season WNBA record with four games in which she scored at least 40 points.

“Stewie’s first season with the New York Liberty has been nothing short of historic on every level,” Jonathan Kolb, the general manager of the New York Liberty, said in a statement.

“The constant resiliency, belief, selflessness, toughness, and professionalism she has brought to the Liberty on a nightly basis is an incredibly rare combination,” said the coach, “which culminated in such an extraordinary season.”

While Alyssa Thomas, a forward for the Connecticut Sun, placed second in the vote in a tight race, A’ja Wilson, a center for the Las Vegas Aces, finished third. Last year’s Most Valuable Player was A’ja Wilson.

After a fruitful run with the Storm, Stewart was one of the most sought-after free agents in the league when she moved to the Liberty in Brooklyn this year. She was the team’s inaugural Most Valuable Player.

The two-time Most Valuable Player of the Finals ended in second place in scoring, third place in rebounding, and fourth place in total blocks, averaging a career-high 23 points per game.
