Keller’s CG helps Pirates top Rockies, end 7-game skid

The Pittsburgh Pirates ended their seven-game losing streak with a 2-0 win over the Colorado Rockies on Monday night behind Mitch Keller’s first career complete game and Rodolfo Castro’s two-run homer.

Keller (4-1) shut out the Rockies on four hits in his first eight-inning start. The fifth-year veteran struck out eight and walked one in a 1:55 game.

Castro’s seventh-inning homer off Kyle Freeland broke the scoreless tie.

Freeland (3-4) started well, allowing two runs and seven hits in seven innings with four strikeouts and three walks.

Pirates leader Ke’Bryan Hayes had two hits. Rockies’ Kris Bryant collected two hits.

Rangers 2–Mariners 1

Seattle (AP)— Jon Gray pitched Texas over Seattle after Marcus Semien’s leadoff single in a two-run seventh inning derailed Logan Gilbert’s perfect game bid.

Semien tied it on Josh Jung’s bases-loaded sacrifice fly, and Jonah Heim’s two-out RBI single drove Gilbert (1-2).

Gray (2-1) allowed four hits in seven innings, but Ty France homered in the first. Texas won its third straight with eight strikeouts and no walks. Gilbert destroyed the Rangers for six innings. From the second to the fourth, he struck out seven batters, matching Mark Langston (1984) and Luis Castillo (2022). He retired 18 hitters in 72 pitches, striking out nine. He struggled in the seventh.

7–2 Yankees

AP—New York New York beat Oakland with four homers, including a two-run shot from Aaron Hicks.

Gleyber Torres’ sixth-inning solo shot against former Yankees lefty JP Sears (0-3) broke the stalemate. New York (19-17) avoided a second consecutive week below.500 with two-run blasts from Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu off Sears.

The Yankees won their fourth game in 10 without slugger Aaron Judge, who is expected back Tuesday with a right hip strain.

Nestor Cortes allowed two runs on six hits in five-plus innings after his worst Yankees start. Reliever Ron Marinaccio (2-1) won.

The worst-in-the-majors A’s fell to 8-28 when Sears allowed five runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Tigers 6—Guardians 2

Cleveland (AP)— Detroit defeated Cleveland as Joey Wentz settled down after surrendering a double and single to start the game and Andy Ibañez homered and scored three runs.

Wentz (1-3) retired 13 of 14 before walking two in the sixth after allowing the first hits. Will Vest relieved him after two outs. Jason Foley, Chasen Shreve, and Alex Lange finished the six-hitter.

Detroit won their sixth game in seven games with Ibañez’s first homer and Riley Greene’s two RBIs.

As the Guardians struggled, José Ramírez homered. Rookie Tanner Bibee (1-1) allowed three runs and five hits in the third and was eliminated in the fourth.

3–0 Rays

Baltimore (AP)— Shane McClanahan pitched six innings and became this season’s first seven-game winner, Josh Lowe and Luke Raley homered, and Tampa Bay defeated Baltimore in a showdown of the AL’s greatest clubs.

Rays stretched AL East lead to 6 1/2 games. McClanahan (7-0) allowed four hits, four walks, and seven strikeouts.

Kyle Gibson (4-2) pitched well in defeat, giving two runs in six-plus innings. Lowe opened the second and Raley the tenth with single shots. Wander Franco sacrificed.

For Tampa Bay, Colin Poche and Kevin Kelly followed McClanahan, and Jason Adam struck out three in the ninth for his fourth save.

After winning 11 series openers, the Orioles lost their first. Baltimore had its first three-game losing streak.

Brewers 9–Dodgers 3

Milwaukee (AP)— Milwaukee beat Los Angeles for the second time in six games thanks to Joey Wiemer and Willy Adames’ three-run homers and Freddy Peralta’s solid pitching.

Wiemer homered off Tony Gonsolin (0-1) in the sixth for his first RBIs since April 29. He hit a seventh-inning RBI double against Phil Bickford.

Christian Yelich’s two-run single helped win. Peralta (4-2) had his third straight strong start with five strikeouts, three hits, one run, and two walks in six innings.

Dodgers fell for the second time in 10 games after Chris Taylor’s ninth-inning two-run homer.

12–5 ROYALS

AP—Kansas City, Mo. Kansas City trounced Chicago and won consecutive home games for the first time this season thanks to MJ Melendez’s four-run homer and Nick Pratto’s three-run double in an eight-run sixth inning.

Melendez’s 431-foot, two-run blast in the fourth against Dylan Cease and two-run single in the sixth converted a 4-4 game into a Royals romp. Kansas City scored its season-high.

Jose Cuas (2-0) substituted Zack Greinke with two outs in the sixth and retired the only batter.

Cease (2-2) allowed seven runs on nine hits in five-plus innings. White Sox players Andrew Vaughn and Gavin Sheets homered.

Jackie Bradley Jr. of the Royals went 3 for 4 with two runs and a two-RBI double.

CARDINALS 3–CUBS 1

Chicago (AP)— St. Louis overcame Chicago with a tiebreaking double from Willson Contreras at Wrigley Field.

After an eight-game losing run, St. Louis’ bullpen helped it win again. Génesis Cabrera (1-0), Jordan Hicks, and Ryan Helsley relieved Miles Mikolas with 4 2/3 innings of one-hit ball. Helsley saved four.

Cardinals won their first series opener in 12 attempts. A franchise record 11 straight losses in such contests started the season.

Dansby Swanson’s fifth-inning RBI double scored Chicago’s only run. The Cubs lost their fifth game in seven on Marcus Stroman’s two-run six innings.

Diamondbacks 5–Marlins 2

Phoenix (AP)— Christian Walker hit a 459-foot solo shot and added an RBI double as Arizona beat Miami for its fourth win in five games. Zac Gallen pitched seven excellent innings.

Walker’s fourth-inning double scored Emmanuel Rivera. His eighth homer of the season followed.

Gabriel Moreno and Ketel Marte’s RBI singles scored Arizona twice in the sixth. Moreno doubled in three hits.

Gallen (5-1) allowed one run on five hits with seven strikeouts.

Braxton Garrett (1-2) pitched nicely until getting hit in the sixth. He allowed four runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out six as the Marlins lost their sixth game in seven.

5–1 NATIONALS

San Francisco (AP)— Washington defeated San Francisco with Jake Irvin’s first career win.

Irvin pitched a perfect game for the Nationals, who are last in the NL East, in his second career start and first on the road. The 26-year-old right-hander allowed four Giants hits and three walks.

CJ Abrams drove in two runs and Luis García singled twice for his fourth straight game. After Victor Robles went on the injured list Monday, Alex Call, the Nationals’ new center fielder, had an RBI double.

San Francisco lost its second straight following a four-game winning streak. Joc Pederson homered. San Francisco’s finest pitcher this season, Anthony DeSclafani (3-2), allowed 10 hits and five runs in seven innings.

ANGELS 6, ASTROS 4

Anaheim, Calif. Shohei Ohtani’s RBI doubles and Brandon Drury’s eighth-inning triple helped Los Angeles beat Houston.

The Angels are 2-2 on their homestand after Hunter Renfroe homered and Taylor Ward had three hits.

Astros David Hensley homered.

Ohtani tied it at 4-all in the fifth with a line-drive double off the right-center wall and scored a run in the second.

Matt Moore (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 shutout innings for the Angels and Carlos Estévez earned his eighth save. Rafael Montero (0-2) lost.
