IPL 2024 results: Chennai Super Kings beat Royal Challengers Bangalore in opener as Shivam Dube stars
In the opening match of the 2024 Indian Premier League, Shivam Dube played a crucial role in guiding the Chennai Super Kings to victory over the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Bangalore found themselves struggling at 78-5 despite a modest contribution from Virat Kohli, who managed 21 runs. However, a resilient partnership between Dinesh Karthik (38 not out) and Anuj Rawat (48) propelled Bangalore to a competitive total of 173-6. Chennai’s Bangladeshi pace bowler, Mustafizur Rahman, shone with figures of 4-29.
Chasing the target, the defending champions faced some early setbacks but managed to steady their innings. Dube’s unbeaten 38, coupled with a valuable contribution from Ravindra Jadeja (25 not out), guided Chennai to victory. Notably, Chennai opted not to include England all-rounder Moeen Ali in their lineup, while Bangalore omitted Tom Curran, Will Jacks, and Reece Topley from their squad.
In the first innings, Bangalore got off to a decent start with openers Faf du Plessis and Kohli putting on a 41-run partnership. However, wickets tumbled quickly after du Plessis’s dismissal for 35 off 23 balls. Rajat Patidar and Glenn Maxwell failed to contribute, leaving Bangalore in a precarious position at 78-5. Kohli’s departure and Cameron Green’s dismissal further added to their woes before Karthik and Rawat steadied the ship with crucial knocks.
Chennai’s innings began positively as they raced to 38 without loss in the first four overs. Despite losing captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (15) and opener Rachin Ravindra (37 off 15 balls) early on, Chennai remained in control. Ajinkya Rahane (27) and Daryl Mitchell (22) chipped in with useful contributions before Dube and Jadeja guided Chennai to a comfortable victory.
The match showcased thrilling cricketing action, setting the tone for an exciting season ahead in the Indian Premier League.
