Free Agent Victor Cruz Anxious to Continue NFL Career

Former New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz is still waiting for a team to pick him up.

Cruz was released by the Giants as a free agent in early February, and since then he has met with several teams but no one has chosen to sign the receiver.

Cruz spoke with the New York Post on Tuesday and stated that he has a strong desire stay in the NFL.

“I just want to play,” said Cruz. “I’m just anxious to get on a team, anxious to play some football to see where I end up.

“I’m just anxious to see someone that wants me on their team and I end up being there. It’s my first time being in this position, it’s my first time being in free agency. After being on a team for seven years, you never know what to expect. I’m just excited for this opportunity, excited to be ready, and see where I end up.”

Cruz, 30, signed with the Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2010 out of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He was on injured reserve for most of his rookie season and became the Giants standout receiver in 2011 when he scored nine touchdowns and recorded 1,536 yards.

He only played in six games in 2014 due to suffering a major knee injury during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles and was out for the 2015 season. Cruz made his return in 2016, played in 15 games, but only recorded one touchdown.

His effectiveness after recovering from the surgery would certainly cause other teams to be hesitant on signing him. Cruz has reached out to former Giants coach Tom Coughlin to see about joining the Jacksonville Jaguars, now that Coughlin is part of the front office.

“I’m all for it,” said Cruz. “Any time you know someone and you know a coach like Coach Coughlin and you know his pedigree and what he’s about, for him to be on another team, you’re always for that opportunity.”

“You have to always stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready,” said Cruz. “That’s always been my motto.”
