After a rain and lightning delay, the Eagles and the Atlanta Falcons were off in their first matchup of the 2018 season in Philadelphia on Thursday night. It has been a tough preseason for the Falcons, who lost all of their preseason games. The Eagles did not do much better – they only won one game against the New York Jets 10-9.
There were many who wondered whether the defending Super Bowl Champions would be able to pull off another fantastic season, starting with game one. Last time the two teams met was at the NFC Divisional Playoff, which the Eagles won 15-10.
The Eagles started off slow, especially with their offense. Julio Jones, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver, did an outstanding job and had 169 yards and 10 receptions. Eagles coach, Doug Pederson, debuted a new play, called “Philly Philly,” which was similar to their play in the Super Bowl last season, called “The Philly Special.” Both plays required Nick Foles to be on the receiving end of the ball. Bud Light just put up a statue at Lincoln Financial Field of Foles and Pederson calling the play from the Super Bowl.
Jay Ajayi scored both of the Eagles’ touchdowns. He reportedly ran max 17.41 mph in his last touchdown. The Eagles had four sacks on the game. For the Falcons, Tevin Coleman had their only touchdown and Deon Jones had an interception from the Eagles. Julio Jones almost made the game even with a catch in the very last seconds of the game but landed out of bounds.
Quarterback Nick Foles played in one regular season and the playoff for the Eagles last season and started this game. Captain Carson Wentz is still recovering from his torn ACL, and people are wondering when he will be released for full contact. Foles struggled throughout this game. In the end, the Eagles came out on top 18-12.
The Eagles play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Falcons play the Carolina Panthers both on September 16th.
