ATP roundup: Jack Draper pulls off massive upset at Sofia Open

The Italian No. 1 seed, Lorenzo Musetti, was beaten on Wednesday in the second round of the Sofia Open in Sofia, Bulgaria, by Great Britain’s Jack Draper, 7-5, 6-2.

Draper upset-seeded opponents alongside Turkish wild card Cem Ilkel and Russian Pavel Kotov by winning 31 of 35 first-service points, seven aces, and five break points saved. Fourth-seeded Sebastian Baez and Kotov were tied 3-6, 7-6 (4) when the Argentine retired, while Ilkel defeated No. 6 seed Max Purcell of Australia 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Third-seeded German Jan-Lennard Struff defeated British qualifier Billy Harris 7-6 (5), 6-4, while second-seeded Frenchman Adrian Mannarino defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain 6-4, 6-4.

Along with fellow Hungarian Fabian Marozsan, Austria’s Sebastian Ofner, ranked seventh, and Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics, ranked eighth, also triumphed in their bouts.

Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego and Fabio Fognini secured victories to book their spots in the Metz, France, quarterfinals.

Wild card Fognini overcame fifth-seeded Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5), while No. 6 Sonego easily defeated Jordanian qualifier Abdullah Shelbayh 6-3, 7-5. Despite Bublik’s 19 aces, Fognini managed the comeback.

Other winners were Alexander Shevchenko of Russia, Pierre-Hugues Herbert, a wild card, and Frenchman Luca Van Assche.
