Arsenal beats Chelsea 3-1, takes league lead for now

Defeating a sluggish Chelsea 3-1 on Tuesday, Arsenal snapped a four-game losing streak and momentarily reclaimed first place in the Premier League.

In a lopsided first half, Arsenal was up 3-0 after 34 minutes thanks to goals from Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard, who scored two goals that were remarkably identical to each other. Chelsea, managed by interim manager Frank Lampard, suffered its sixth straight defeat in all categories.

After Chukwunonso Madueke’s goal in the 65th minute, the visitors didn’t offer much in the way of a response and the hosts ended up winning the game. The visitors never really threatened a comeback.

The victory moves Arsenal two points clear of Manchester City at the top of the rankings, but Pep Guardiola’s squad has two games left, including a home match against West Ham on Wednesday, so it is unlikely to hold that position for long.

Arsenal had just suffered a demoralizing 4-1 loss to City the previous week and had previously gone on a run of three straight draws, which had seen its hold on the title slipping away. However, as it attempted to turn things around, Mikel Arteta’s team couldn’t have asked for much simpler competition.

Similar to how he set up the second goal, Granit Xhaka sent a low cross into the box from the left to find Odegaard, who beat Kepa Arrizabalaga with his left foot both times.
