Alcaraz says self-belief helped overcome injury woes and reclaim top ranking

Carlos Alcaraz, a prodigy of the tennis world, has attributed his recent success to his unwavering self-belief. Despite enduring injuries at the beginning of the season, he made a resolute comeback and claimed the victory at the prestigious Indian Wells tournament, leading him to regain his rightful top ranking.

In his most recent match, the 19-year-old Spaniard vanquished Daniil Medvedev, terminating his 19-match win streak, and catapulting over Novak Djokovic in the rankings. Djokovic, who has not received the COVID-19 vaccination, is presently incapacitated to compete in the hardcourt swing in the United States.

Alcaraz missed the Australian Open due to abdominal and hamstring injuries, which permitted Djokovic to capture the top spot in the rankings. However, Alcaraz made a triumphant return to the ATP Tour in February, clinching his first title since the U.S. Open in 2020 at Buenos Aires, and advancing to the Rio final before retiring from Acapulco with a strained hamstring.

Despite confronting significant challenges, Alcaraz persevered and labored intently with his team to recover. “I have absolute faith in myself and the work I’m doing at the moment, and I believe that is the most crucial aspect,” he exclaimed.

Reclaiming his top ranking was a momentous feat for Alcaraz, who recognized that Djokovic’s absence from competition made it slightly easier. He also became the youngest man to win the Indian Wells and Miami Open titles, earning the laudable ‘Sunshine Double’ distinction.

Alcaraz attributes his enhancement in his mental game as the area that has progressed the most, citing his experience and confidence gained from playing spectacular matches and seizing titles. “I now know how to navigate through tough situations,” he affirmed.

Alcaraz is poised to defend his Miami Open title this week, and his unwavering self-belief will undoubtedly serve as a crucial element in his success on the court.
