Ahmed takes four wickets as England beat Ireland

An understudy In the second One-Day International, played at Trent Bridge on Saturday, England easily defeated Ireland by 48 runs, dismissing the visitors for 286 after amassing 334-8.

Rehan Ahmed, a right-arm spinner, caused most of the damage with the ball for England, tearing through the middle order to claim four for 54 as Ireland’s pursuit failed.

Opening batsman, Will Jacks led England in scoring with 94 runs in their 50 overs before falling while trying to hit a six to reach his century. Sam Hain added 89 runs to the total.

Paul Stirling, the captain of Ireland, and Andy Balbirnie pieced together 46 runs in the first four overs of their innings, helping England’s fast bowler Paul Scrimshaw have a disastrous debut with a string of no-balls.

Ireland’s momentum was stopped when Matthew Potts bowled Stirling with the following delivery, capping Scrimshaw’s redemption by removing Balbirnie with the penultimate ball of the fourth over.

Harry Tector attempted to retaliate as he scored 39 runs off 40 balls. Still, Irish wickets continued to fall, and Tector’s fight was finally broken by Ahmed when Jacks collected an outstanding running catch.

George Dockrell, who led Ireland in scoring with 43 runs, was also bowled by Ahmed, but the visitors steadfastly refused to give up and batted admirably in the lower order.

Before Scrimshaw ended the game, Josh Little holed out to Brydon Carse at long-on after putting up 55 for the last wicket with Craig Young (40 not out).

The third game between the two teams will be played in Bristol on Tuesday after the first ODI between the teams was postponed due to rain.
