76ers fire coach Doc Rivers after 3 seasons, AP source says

A source tells The Associated Press that the Philadelphia 76ers dismissed coach Doc Rivers on Tuesday after a third straight second-round playoff elimination.

The person talked to the AP anonymously because the team had not disclosed the change.

Rivers led the 76ers to another 50-win season behind NBA MVP Joel Embiid but failed to reach the Eastern Conference Finals.

After losing Game 6 at home, the 76ers lost Game 7 on the road at Boston.

Rivers lost Game 7s 6-10. No other NBA coach has 10 losses.

Rivers and the 76ers lost a deciding Game 7 to Atlanta in the second round in 2021. After Sunday’s loss, Embiid supported Rivers’ return, but Harden remained undecided.

Rivers was 236-154 in three years with the Sixers. He coached the 2008 NBA champion Boston Celtics.
